February 27, 2025 – igus®, a global leader in motion plastics, has introduced the drylin® WWP linear guide, which features a PTFE-free locking carriage. This new solution provides an intuitive and compact alternative to complex mechanical and electronic adjustment systems, making it ideal for applications that require simple and precise positioning. The guide is engineered from lubrication-free high-performance polymers and aluminum, ensuring a lightweight, hygienic, and low-maintenance solution for various positioning tasks.

As technology advances, users increasingly seek enhanced ergonomics and individualized comfort in everyday applications. Whether adjusting a screen to an optimal viewing angle, positioning a headrest, or securing a sensor in place, the need for seamless, user-friendly adjustments continues to grow.

“Many manufacturers require a minimalist linear guide with a snap function that eliminates the need for levers or intricate mechanical and electrical components,” explains Michael Hornung, Product Manager for drylin Linear and Drive Technology at igus. “To meet this demand, the drylin WWP linear guide has been developed to offer an uncomplicated and cost-effective solution.”

Intuitive and Reliable Positioning

The system consists of two key components: a polymer carriage, which attaches to the moving object, and an aluminum linear rail that facilitates smooth adjustments. Integrated within the rail are small polymer rings positioned at predefined intervals. A preloaded steel ball, housed on the underside of the carriage, engages with these rings upon reaching a designated position, securing the object in place with an audible click. The maximum static load capacity reaches 100N in the vertical direction and 50N horizontally.

For repositioning, a controlled force is applied to disengage the ball, allowing free movement until it locks into the next preset position.

“The system is highly intuitive, durable, and failsafe due to its elimination of complex mechanical components,” adds Hornung.

Extensive testing conducted in igus’ 4,000m² test laboratory has confirmed the guide’s long-lasting performance and reliability.

Lightweight, Durable, and PFAS-Free

The linear rails are available in lengths up to 3,000mm and can be customized with hard anodized, silver anodized, or black anodized finishes to accommodate diverse application requirements. For further flexibility, igus also offers rail profiles without pre-drilled holes to meet specific mounting needs. The polymer carriages are available in two sizes: 1030 (L60 x W56 x H24mm) and 0620 (L40 x W32 x H14mm).

The drylin WWP solution is significantly more compact and lightweight than conventional recirculating ball-bearing systems.

“By switching to this system, users can achieve up to a 65% weight reduction compared to aluminum miniature carriages,” notes Hornung. “This advantage makes it particularly well-suited for applications where space and weight are critical factors, such as interior components in vehicles, aircraft, and furniture.”

Furthermore, the drylin WWP carriage is manufactured from a high-performance polymer embedded with solid lubricants, ensuring continuous smooth operation without needing external lubrication. The material is free from approximately 100 PFAS chemicals, aligning with future regulatory requirements and meeting low-fogging standards for the automotive industry.

With its innovative mechanical detent, lightweight construction, and maintenance-free operation, the drylin WWP linear guide from igus delivers an efficient and cost-effective positioning solution across multiple industries.
