Facing the sun without lubrication: igus components ensure precise adjustment of solar trackers
CityFreighter presents “Solartrackr” for RV and mobile homeowners – a production-ready new product with maintenance-free motion plastics

15 January 2025 – CityFreighter, Inc., has introduced the innovative “Solartrackr,” a solar tracker designed for recreational vehicles that autonomously aligns with the sun to maximize energy efficiency. This groundbreaking product incorporates lubrication-free motion plastics from igus, ensuring precise and maintenance-free operation even in challenging environmental conditions.
The Solartrackr addresses the common problem of insufficient power generation due to static solar panels. It offers a cost-effective and lightweight solution for RV and mobile homeowners, starting at $1,400 (excluding solar flex panels). Weighing just 21 kg (47 lb) and compatible with a 340-watt panel, the Solartrackr delivers exceptional mobility and versatility. It includes an integrated anemometer for automatic retraction during high winds and height adjustment features to prevent rooftop collisions. While tailored for mobile homes, this technology has potential applications for bus stops and remote installations.
igus Motion Plastics Deliver Durability and Precision
Central to the Solartrackr’s design are igus components, which provide lubrication-free, weather-resistant functionality. The PRT-04 slewing ring bearing facilitates precise, multi-directional adjustments of the solar panel. Additionally, igus-printed gears enable angular alignment, optimizing solar energy capture.
Height adjustments are achieved using stainless-steel trapezoidal lead screws paired with iglide® J lead screw nuts. These high-performance plastic components maintain reliability under varying weather conditions. Scissor bearings and other structural elements benefit from plain bearings and thrust washers made from iglide materials, such as J, G, and W300, known for their endurance and wear resistance.
“The igus components are a critical factor in the success of our Solartrackr,” stated Michael Schoening, CEO of CityFreighter. “Their precision, maintenance-free operation, and durability enable us to deliver a reliable, efficient, cost-effective solution.”
From Prototype to Market
The Solartrackr is transitioning from prototype to full-scale production, supported by a crowdfunding campaign to accelerate the process. Early adopters can access this pioneering technology, allowing broader adoption of autonomous solar tracking systems in various applications.
